Anthony Gaughan
Anthony Gaughan is a visiting professor of law at the University of Iowa College of Law. He is the Kern Family Chair in Law and Professor of Law at Drake University Law School. He is also a senior fellow in the Election Law Program at the Ohio State University Moritz College of Law.
The Iowa Supreme Court appointed Professor Gaughan to the Iowa Rules of Civil Procedure Review Task Force in August 2024. He teaches and writes in the fields of Civil Procedure, Constitutional Law, Election Law, and Legal & Constitutional History. He is the author of many scholarly works, including the book, The Last Battle of the Civil War: United States versus Lee, 1861-1883.
Professor Gaughan is an elected member of the American Law Institute. A former U.S. Navy officer, he served with a joint task force in Baghdad during the Iraq War. He received the Defense Meritorious Service Medal and the Iraq Campaign Medal for his military service in Iraq. He also worked for five years as a litigator with a large Milwaukee-based law firm.
Professor Gaughan has won several teaching awards at Drake University and the University of Wisconsin-Madison. He taught Civil Procedure and Election Law as a visiting professor at the Ohio State University Moritz College of Law in 2024 and at the University of Nebraska College of Law in 2023. He received his BA from the University of Minnesota, his MA from Louisiana State University, his PhD (in history) from the University of Wisconsin-Madison, and his JD from Harvard Law School.
