When Lois Gibbs moved to Love Canal in 1972, it was a modest neighborhood in Niagara Falls, New York. What she did not know is the area was used as a chemical dumpsite from the 1920s through the 1950s. It was simply covered over with dirt before over 100 homes and a school was built on top of it. A record amount of rainfall caused puddles of hazardous chemicals to appear in yards, homes, and school grounds. “Love Canal is Gibbs’ original account of the landmark case.”
