Iowa Law alumni Charlotte Beyer Hubbell (76JD) and Fred Hubbell (76JD) committed $5 million on Nov. 30, 2021, to create the Hubbell Environmental Law Initiative (HELI).

The initiative will generate opportunities for the University of Iowa College of Law to deepen and broaden its engagement with environmental issues in Iowa and across the nation. In time, this initiative will develop and strengthen the legal environmental community in the state of Iowa. One of the goals of the initiative is to create and increase dialogue that will contribute actionable solutions to environmental problems.

The College of Law will seek opportunities for students and faculty at the law school and across campus to engage with one another in an interdisciplinary way and connect with external environmental organizations on collaborative problem-solving.

The College of Law will be hiring a HELI director as well as a Hubbell Environmental Law Fellow. While start-up activities are underway, HELI will co-sponsor a University of Iowa Center for Human Rights series on climate change this spring and offer scholarships to students with environmental law aspirations.

The College of Law is grateful for the opportunity through HELI to work together on solutions to pressing environmental issues in the state, nation, and world.
